Why the spark plug is important
Here are a few key points:
A spark plug creates the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. If the spark is weak or mistimed, you’ll lose power, have rough idling, higher fuel consumption and possibly misfires.
The plug must operate in a very narrow “sweet-spot” temperature range: too cold and carbon fouling builds up; too hot and you risk pre-ignition or electrode damage.
Quality plugs like NGK’s are used as OEM (original equipment) by many motorcycle manufacturers, which means good fitment, reliability and performance.
Even with high quality plugs, improper installation or using the wrong heat range/fitment causes most failures — not the plug itself.
How to choose the correct NGK spark plug for your 120-250 cc bike
Here are the steps and key tips:
1. Check your bike’s manual for the recommended plug part number
That part number takes into account thread size, reach (how far the plug extends into the combustion chamber), heat range, resistor/no-resistor, etc. For example, one manual warns:
“Improper spark plug selection may cause severe engine damage which may not be covered under warranty.”
So stick close to the recommendation.
2. Understand NGK’s heat range, electrode materials and naming
The “heat range” tells you how fast the plug conducts heat away from the firing tip. In NGK’s coding system: A lower number = hotter plug (retains more heat); a higher number = cooler plug (dissipates heat faster).
For typical 120-250 cc bikes, especially in Malaysian traffic (stop-start, warm climate, possibly loaded with two riders), you’ll want a plug that can handle moderate to high load, and stay clean (avoid fouling) and avoid overheating.
Electrode material: NGK offers standard copper-core plugs, platinum plugs, iridium plugs. For higher performance or more longevity you might opt for iridium or platinum.
3. Make sure fitment is correct
Thread size, reach (length the plug projects into the chamber) must match what the engine expects. A wrong reach plug can damage the piston or be inefficient.
The torque when installing must be correct; under-torque or over-torque causes problems (as cited by NGK).
The gap (the gap between centre & ground electrode) usually comes pre-set for many NGK plugs, but check against your manual. Some users suggest not altering gap for precious-metal plugs unless necessary.
4. Consider your usage & environment
If you mostly ride slow in traffic, short trips: risk of fouling is higher (because plug may not reach self-cleaning temperature). Maybe a “hotter” plug is safer.
If you ride high revs, or in hot conditions, or have engine modifications: you may need a “cooler” plug to dissipate heat more effectively.
Given Malaysia’s climate (hot, humid) + city/touring mix: choose a high-quality plug with good heat range margin.
5. Verify aftermarket authenticity and quality
For premium plugs (iridium, platinum) cost goes up; but fitment and material matter.
There are counterfeit plugs in the market (especially popular brands) – ensure you buy from authorized dealer, check packaging, markings, authenticity.

NGK DR7EA Spark Plug: A good example of a standard plug; may fit many smaller capacity bikes.
NGK C7HSA Spark Plug: Another standard plug variant; price is lower – good for budget replacements if specs match.
NGK Motorcycle Plug (Standard): General standard plug, helpful for typical commuter bikes.
NGK Iridium/Platinum Upgrade Plug: For upgrade use: better electrode material (iridium/platinum) for longer life and possibly better performance.
NGK Premium Iridium Spark Plug: Premium option; best for performance or high-stress use.
